POTATO PRODUCTION & MARKET NETWORKING SEMINAR
On the 18th of January 2020, Neloshan organized a potato production and market networking training seminar for the single mothers in conjunction with the local Cereal Growers Association and a soil analyst.
The session covered key areas such as maximizing yields while reducing costs, understanding soil testing and seed quality, and accessing better markets.
An initial assessment revealed that local potato yields were significantly lower than in neighboring regions.
Through expert guidance, the farmers learned that poor soil health and low-quality seeds were major factors affecting both yield and market value.
They were encouraged to embrace change by adopting certified seed varieties, improving farm management practices, and avoiding shortcuts that reduce long-term productivity.
The seminar also introduced the idea of commercializing their farming efforts to create more sustainable income.
The women explored potential partnerships with agro-based organizations for better pricing and subsidies, as well as financial institutions for funding opportunities.
The soil analyst highlighted the impact of soil acidity on crop performance, explaining how it leads to nutrient imbalances and increased disease.
She demonstrated proper soil sampling techniques and emphasized how targeted use of lime could restore soil health, reduce costs, and boost yields.
RESULTS
By the end of the seminar, the women described the experience as highly informative and empowering, equipping them with practical knowledge to overcome their farming challenges and improve their livelihoods.
