Potato Production and Market Networking Seminar

On January 18, 2020, Neloshan hosted a hands-on agricultural training seminar for single mothers in partnership with the local Cereal Growers Association and a soil analyst. The session focused on practical strategies to improve livelihoods—teaching participants how to maximize profits while reducing costs, produce higher-quality potato yields through soil testing, understand the impact of seed variety and growing conditions, and access better markets.

The day began with a review of local farming performance, which revealed significantly lower yields compared to neighboring regions. The women openly shared the challenges they face, including unpredictable weather, limited access to capital, high input costs, pests and disease, lack of soil testing, and difficulty accessing quality markets, education, and reliable seed sources. Many had relied on replanting smaller potatoes from previous harvests for over a decade, unknowingly limiting their productivity.

Through expert guidance and discussion, it became clear that soil quality and seed selection were key factors affecting both yield and market value. The agricultural officer emphasized the need to adopt certified seed varieties and improve farming practices. Participants were introduced to new seed options to trial and encouraged to move away from shortcuts in favor of proper farm management techniques.

The seminar also highlighted the importance of viewing farming as a sustainable business. Women were encouraged to explore commercialization opportunities and partnerships with agro-based organizations and financial institutions, helping them access better pricing, subsidies, and funding.

A soil expert provided critical insight into the role of soil health, particularly the impact of acidity on crop performance. She demonstrated how to properly collect soil samples and explained how managing soil conditions—such as applying the correct amount of lime—can significantly improve yields and reduce costs.

By the end of the seminar, participants described the experience as both eye-opening and empowering, leaving equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to overcome their challenges and improve their farming outcomes.
